Woo! Way behind on blogging.
On our third day on the Big Island, we hiked the Kilauea Iki crater trail. The trail leads around part of the rim, then down into the crater the equivalent of a 40 story building. Then you hike across the still steaming volcano caldera to the other side, and up once more to the rim.
The volcano last erupted in the '50s, but it's still hot under there and steam comes out through cracks in the solidified lava.
From the top, at the trailhead:
Mitch in a steaming crater...
This photo shows the white trail worn across the caldera...so many footsteps.
After crossing the caldera, we sat down for a water and snack break before making the ascent.
Life in the lava.
Plaque at our B&B.
