Old Friends, New Friends

Met up with an old friend from my summer camp days, who also lives here in town, and his sweetie. We had a great time! It is wonderful to reconnect.

Mountain Friends

Have been reconnecting on Facebook with old friends from The Mountain, a summer camp that I attended and where I later worked. It's been great to touch base with folks; especially with Chris who is in town so we can meet in person.

Here's a 1988 camp photo when I was staff...

Floor Lamp Love

Mitch and I made a 2 foot high floor lamp this weekend from instructions in the book, "Handmade Modern". We love the result!

Here are the materials...

And here is our assembled lamp. It definitely went better as a team effort.

Here's one of the drawer pulls that we used as legs...came out great. THANKS AGAIN to Mom for giving me the book.

My eyes were riveted to this midcentury Modern style chair when I was at my Mom's house last week. Boy was I surprised when I found out she got it for ME! Wow! I love it. Really hit it out of the ballpark with this one!

She also got me this DIY book...I've already started on my first project. I LOVE THIS BOOK! It's "Handmade Modern: Midcentury Inspired Projects For Your Home" by Todd Oldham. I give it 5 stars for midcentury enthusiasts.

New Floor

Mitch and I finished the red oak floor yesterday. He had installed it and sanded it, and we both applied the water based polyurethane (hardly any fumes). If you can DIY, this was a good deal, $2/sq ft, real oak. The fake stuff in the store cost more. 'Course you gotta figure in the sander rental.

Now it's on to the walls! I am the principal wall painter in this house.

In New Orleans helping out, mom had an operation. She was released from the hospital yesterday.

Some photos...

Plate lunch from Crabby Jack's on River Rd. Yes, I gave up on my food plan, but I am going home tomorrow to the straight and narrow. 8-) This is a fried mirliton slice topped with a huge scoop of seafood dressing, laid on a bed of TWO kinds of shrimp: fried shrimp and remoulade shrimp. Side of red potato salad with egg, and a green salad. And a Barq's, OF COURSE!

What I see when I jog through the neighborhood in a futile attempt to burn off what I am eating...

Fountain in the hospital, in an indoor solarium..

Sculpted palm in the hospital solarium...

View from the hospital while waiting for the elevator...

Another view while waiting for the elevator...it's the Mississippi River.

Mom sent my sister Sarah and me out for a day of fun in the French Quarter the day before her surgery...here we are in the Absinthe House on Pirate's Alley next to the cathedral.

Trying absinthe...they pour the absinthe over a sugar cube and light the cube on fire. When it burns off, they drip ice water slowly over the cube to dissolve it into the absinthe. Mine tasted like NyQuil. I think it's an acquired taste. Sarah's tasted more herb-like. Woody, sort of.
