What Are These Plants?

The first two photos are the same plant, close up and farther away. Is it a fig? What is it? (sorry the 2nd photo isn't rotated correctly)

This is part of a large bush that looks like it could grow to be a full sized tree.

This one is a baby tree - the mature ones are quite tall and the leaves look green and red.

These plants are maybe 6 inches high and are shaped like the tops of pineapples, but aren't stiff or thorny. Maybe they will be blooming next weekend.

What do Vegetarians Eat?

Salad, purple coleslaw, mashed potatoes and onion-sage gravy, corn on the cob and BBQ seitan on a bun.

What's Blooming This Week?

This weekend in our Athens yard, I found a bed of weed choked lettuce, several types of iris and a daffodil plant.

Before the freeze...

Here's what our Athens house looked like last Friday, before the freeze killed all the blooms.

below: I've fallen in love with the Cherokee rose bush. It's gorgeous.

below: can kind of see 3 of the dogwoods...they are very impressive in person. There's a fourth one (huge) not visible in this photo. The bank of azaleas across the front all got burned by the freeze.

Now that we have a city house, we have to do onerous things like mow. Lawn's still patchy from winter, but weeds were getting high.

below: approach to front door.

below: wonderful fragrance...

Shakespearean Hokey Pokey

From a Washington Post contest, the Shakespearean Hokey Pokey:
O proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke,
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wilde release from Heavens yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.
The Hoke, the poke -- banish now thy doubt
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.

When Will Winter End?

This weekend's cold snap burned all my azaleas and had us pulling out the sweaters again. Weather.com says it's 80 degrees in Honolulu...wish I was there right now! Of course, having the below photo as my computer's desktop increases my desire for warm weather.

below: I shot this photo at Sunset Beach, Oahu (2006). If you enlarge the photo, you can see a surfer on the wave wearing striped shorts...supposedly that wards of sharks. I doubt if it works. Behind him you can see the heads of several surfers bobbing in the waves.

Below: We were on one lip of blownout volcano crater Diamondhead (2006). It was hot as Hades, even with Diamondhead extinct. If you look closely, you can see that the green area way below us is the bottom of the crater, with the other crater lip visible in the mid-background. Mountains in the far background. Our whole visit was sun, sun, sun and warmth.

Below: Sandy Beach (2005). This beach is for expert bodysurfers. Wild! You can die bodysurfing here. (Seriously) All we did was watch, soak up rays and let our sunscreen lotion deflect the sneers from the beach boys.

Online Workout Buddy!

Here is one of my online workout buddies, Trecia, with a new haircut and highlights. Looks GREAT!

My online workout buddies have been crucial in keeping me on track and at a healthy weight. We correspond every day and it is an invaluable support system. Maybe one day we will even meet in person.

Trecia's workouts are running, walking, strength training, yoga, scuba diving and anything else that is fun.

I Wish I was on Oahu

Got cold here again today. When I woke up, it was in the 30s. Waiting for summer temps, and wishing I was on Oahu...here are a couple photos from past trips.

below: my husband Mitch in the center with his friends, brothers John and Andy Sexton.

below: the view I had from Waikiki Circle hotel. Ahhhhhhh....

Below: the search for the best Mai Tai.

04/01/07 Athens Weekend Photos

Below: At an outside cafe' again, my amazing, spectacular hubby! He's always smiling when it's warm enough to wear an Aloha shirt.

Below: the studio where I'm slated to teach.

below: near downtown...

below: old fire station; now used (I think) for a community history museum (?). It has original cobblestone driveway fronting those white bay doors.

below: A house near The Grit that we found interesting. We wonder who lives here.

In Athens This Weekend

Below: Live music at a downtown coffeeshop.

Below: people often ask me how I became overweight as a vegetarian. It's easy! Here's a plate of spicy Thai noodles and Curried Tofu in coconut milk sauce. Fat grams galore! And a salad, which is NOT the only thing vegetarians eat, contrary to popular belief.

Below: It's hard to remember you're in the city when your back yard looks like this.

Floor Refinishing, Cont'd

Below: the belt sander used on the floor.

Extreme DIY: Floor Refinishing

We finally completed the floor refinishing on the 3 rooms and hall upstairs! It took a lot of time, but it was worth it.

Below: ripping out the carpet - tack strips and floor staples also had to be pried out.

below: the bare floor with old finish and stains.

Below: in process - the floor after sanding.

Below: completed floor. We used a water based sealer and 3 coats of water based varnish. The water based product has MUCH less fumes than the oil based stuff.
